Help Save Candlestick Point
(Literacy for Environmental Justice)

As most of you know, Governor Schwarzenegger's FY 08-09 state budget proposes to close 48 state parks.  The list includes Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, one of the very few open spaces in Bayview Hunters Point and a critical wetland and wildlife habitat.

Candlestick is in the midst of a multi-year remediation and restoration project addressing acute contamination from industrial and military pollution.
  LEJ's
Native Plants Nursery at Candlestick trains youth interns from Bayview Hunters Point to grow the native plantstock for the Candlestick wetland restoration project.  Closing the park throws the future of the remediation project as a whole into doubt; we urge you to find out more at The California State Parks Foundation and write to your legislators.

LEJ is circling a petition that needs to have as many signatures as possible by March 1.

Nature in the City
will be collecting signatures in support of keeping Candlestick Point open. You may also print off a petition form, fill it out and gather  signatures, then mail it to Literacy for Environmental Justice.  Shortly after the end of the month LEJ has arranged a meeting with Mark Leno's office about the potential closure and other development based threats Candlestick is facing. At the meeting they intend to deliver the petitions in person.  If you have any questions or would like to get more involved call LEJ at
415-282-6840 or email Patrick.

Send signed petitions to:

Save Oregon's Cougars
(Earth Island Institute)

Big Wildlife, one of Earth Island’s newest projects, has filed a lawsuit with several other wildlife protection organizations to stop the federal government from indiscriminately killing cougars in the state of Oregon. The plaintiffs charge that officials at the US Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services did not examine all the adverse environmental impacts of their decision to kill cougars on behalf of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act.

The plan to kill up to 2,000 cougars in Oregon will hurt ranchers and farmers. By killing established adult cougars, government officials are skewing the population towards younger cats more often implicated in conflict with domestic animals. By implementing a plan based on bad science and inaccurate cougar population estimates, officials are actually creating the problem their plan claims to address, the groups assert. Click here for more information about cougars, and read the following articles:
