Native Plant Nursery

Volunteers from Allbirds joined us to celebrate Earth Day by planting seedlings in the Green Hairstreak Corridor.

Volunteer Sarah McConnico worked with us to grow hundreds of plants in her Sunset District backyard.

The plants we grow are planted in public habitats and feed insects, like this Green Hairstreak caterpillar.

Our Nursery grows, donates, sells and native plants destined for in backyards and community gardens all over San Francisco.

What is the Native Plant Nursery?

The nursery is a place where you can help us grow plants that we plant at local habitats, donate to other exciting partner projects, or sell to the public in support our mission. Join us at monthly volunteer nursery workdays, and learn how to harvest native seeds and cuttings and propagate thousands of plants for local habitats! As a volunteer, you can come to nursery workdays and bring plants home to your own backyard to help water and nurture them until maturity. When plants are ready, you can join one of our planting workdays and help plant them, or, you can deliver them back to our nursery site.

Where is the Native Plant Nursery located?

We grow plants at White Crane Springs Community Garden, located just South of 7th Avenue and Lawton Street, near Garden for the Environment.

Why is the Backyard Nursery Network important?

Native plants, such as coast buckwheat, seaside daisy, and dune strawberry, and deerweed provide habitat for our local species. Growing these plants from native seed ensures the survival of endangered plants and our local wildlife. We grow plants from local seeds to ensure greater survival of the plants that have evolved to grow in our habitat restoration sites.

How can I take part?

There are many ways that you can support wildlife at home.

  • Check out our Garden services, and work with our team to design, build, and maintain a mini wildlife sanctuary in your backyard.
