Nature Walk: Heron's Head and India Basin

  • Heron's Head Eco Center 32 Jennings Street San Francisco, CA, 94124 United States (map)

This walk will begin and end at the Heron's Head EcoCenter and will focus on marsh and shorebird ecology, oyster restoration, and a trip to the new India Basin Park at 900 Innes.

The tides will be very low on that date and conditions will be ideal for winter shorebird and marsh ecology observations.

This walk will be approximately 3 miles round trip.

Walk Leaders: Emil Fogarino & Miguel Dimas

Emil is a local naturalist and educator who recently retired from teaching marine biology and natural history at Washington High SF. As a native San Franciscan Emil enjoys sharing and learning about the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Miguel manages the EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park. He is a scientist and educator and loves connecting San Franciscans to nature and increasing representation in the environmental field.

Details:

Meet and greet with Miguel Dimas of SF Rec and Park in front of Heron's Head Eco Center -- we will hear about the programs of the EcoCenter, Heron's Head, and India Basin.

Preparation:

The walk will be mostly flat, with some rough terrain along the shoreline. Wear layers and comfortable shoes. There is a possibility that your shoes could get wet if you are extra enthusiastic about exploring the tidal zone, but generally, you'll be on dry land.

Bring water and a snack. Binoculars will add to this experience!

Meeting Location:

Meet at the Heron's Head EcoCenter. Parking is available in the lot in front of the Heron's Head Eco Center and mini-park as well as on Jennings and surrounding streets near the Bay Natives Nursery.

Transportation:

Muni service to the site includes the 15, 19, and 44 busses.

Weather:

Heavy rain will cancel. We will send out an announcement the morning of the walk if we decide to cancel.

Cost:

This walk is FREE to attend (with RSVPs kindly requested).
